OVERTRUST VS MISTRUST OF COGNITIVE ERGONOMICS
Overtrust: The Three Mile Island case
|
On March 28, 1979, the Long Island Nuclear Plant suffered a mishap.
WHAT HAPPENED?
New technology being used to monitor the state of the nuclear plant misreported on the status of a single valve.
The technicians trusted the machine so much that they did not verify the state of the valves themselves!
Here, the machine's error was known as a "control system design error"
MORAL
Although computers are becoming increasingly similar to humans in their capabilities, nothing beats human intervention!
